Is it ok that we didn't call the cops?

I was with family and walking down the street when we heard a couple arguing very loudly. A woman was cursing loudly at a man, screaming the f word over and over and hitting him. He was not hitting her back and nobody seemed to be in serious immediate danger. My mom was worried that calling the police might escalate things or they might misinterpret the situation (we have read news stories of people being shot by cops). I want to know if you guys think it is normal we didn't call the police.

Is It OK To?

  • Calling the cops sounds like a cowardly move. If you were worried you should have intervened and helped out yourself.

  • I don't think that calling the police would've solved it, but trying to stop at least the physical violence would be far better than just ignoring it. At least threaten to call it, so then if they don't comply the call would be on them not you.

    • They were pretty far away, we were just walking by.

  • Calling the cops for anything is a death sentence.

  • it was really none of your or your family's business. My parents argue 24/7 and they once did in public. I imagine my parents would be pissed if some strangers called the police on them for something that every couple goes through

  • Could have, would have, should have. I don't think the cops wouldve done a lot for them either way.

  • Probably not, I would of observed to situation for a while and call the police when it's absolutely needed
