Is it OK to hope my children will be autistic like me?

I will have children, even though some think I shouldn't. I'm not intellectually disabled.

Is It OK To?

  • Wishing mental disabilities on your kid to make yourself feel better is probably the most selfish thing you could ever do.

    • Is autism a disability? I think it's just different.
Many people with learning disability are also autistic so it colours people's judgement of what autistic actually means.

    • I don't see autism as a disability. Hopefully someday people will see autism for what it truly is. But first we need to bring down harmful organizations such as Autism Speaks.

  • I'm autistic and I feel that if my children were autistic too I'd be able to understand them better. I've read lots of stories of non-autistic people saying that they felt that their autistic parents didn't love them. I'm sure they did, they just didn't understand.

  • I have autism, and I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. What the hell did your children do to you? They aren't even born yet.

    • I'm sorry you feel that way. I like my autism.

    • Lol I know, I just wanted to see what other people think.

  • I have autism and my dad does too and my mom has some kind of mental illness. There's nothing wrong with that and it's often genetic. If I had kids they would probably inherit both my problems and attributes such as high intelligence and creativity.

  • There's plenty of resources you could avail yourself of to learn how to make your children, autistic or neurotypical, feel loved. You can hope they have brown hair or your partner's eyebrows too but in the end they will be who they will be and you can help that or hinder it.

  • I could understand your point. I don't have any children, but being insecure about my intelligence myself, it would be a pretty unnerving to see my child grow up smarter than I am. I myself am not autistic, but the hypothetical scenario of that would make it even worse, so I definitely understand where you're coming from.

    • Autism doesn't affect intelligence. Many have higher IQs.

  • If you chose to be a parent, you're to wish your children will have it better than you. I have autism, and while I don't want children, if I did, I wouldn't want them to have this disorder. I don't care if they have high-functioning autism, it's still a painful disorder.
