Is it ok to yell at my neighbor to shut his dog up

My neighbors dog barks for hours everyday. I yell at the dog and whistle at it which stops it barking sometimes for a bit.
This drives my neighbor insane. He can't stand me yelling at him or his dog.

My thinking is "well why are you allowed to make noise, but I'm not"

"if he don't like me yelling at it, then maybe he should discipline it"

"if I have to put up with the stressing noise, then I have a right to deal with it"

"I never purchased the dog, agreed to look after it, so why am I having to put up with it"

"if you wont deal with your dog, I will. I believe that I have the right to take the dog away, and to a shelter somewhere if you are not equipped to deal with a pet"

This is my thinking. Am I fair or am I crazy. I mean I really want to punch this guy in the teeth. We shut all our windows and doors and I still hear this stupid dogs over the tv.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Have you ever tried barking back? When I was a shift worker I was driven to the point of insanity by the neighbours dog incessant barking that I started to bark back. This seemed to intimidate the dog and I won some kind of psychological war cos it shut up soon after that

    • I tell ya, I have thought about it. Going up to the fence and just "bark, bark, bark, farking bark, bark farking bark. Didn't want the other neighbors to think I was a weirdo. But I just dont care anymore. The shape of our house and its position make us get most of the noise but it would have to be upsetting other neighbors. Maybe if one more neighbor jumps in and tells him off he may get it, maybe not though...

  • Just remember its not the dogs fault. Im by far an animal lover, but the dog doesnt know any better.

  • Call the police. They will measure the decibels and force the owner to either bring him inside, teach him not to bark or give him away

      • Yes, sadly I had to do this to a neighbour many years ago. I adore dogs and can put up with a fair amount of crap from them, but it was so loud all day and all night with no break. I had gone round so many times to ask her to bring the dog in or get it to be quiet and her answer was always "dogs bark, what can you do".

I was straight with her about contacting the police. It turned out others had contacted them already and she'd been asked to shut the dog up and hadn't done so. This time when they went round she was forced to bring the dog inside. I dunno how they got her to do it - I heard that she was given a hefty fine and told that the dog would be taken away, but I don't know for sure if that's true because I wasn't privy to that conversation.

This was in England btw. But I imagine that the law would be similar in America too.

        • In Australia it's our shire councils that deal with Animal noise complaints.

I have had neighbor say the same thing to me "all dogs bark". Some people just don't get it. Its like all lawn mowers make noise but there is a big difference between mowing your lawn and leaving the lawn mower running all day for no reason.

One day I was out my back and my neighbor seen me and started yelling threats like "complain about my dog again and I"m gonna smash ya", well my dog barked at him cause he was swinging on our fence yelling. He then yells "see your dog barks to". OMG some people will never get it..

    • Yes, this is reality!

      Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Well, at least you are just yelling, because there are people out there who do far worse when they get upset about barking dogs.

When I lived in the Houston area I heard on the news that some piece of shit threw poisoned meat over the fence of a doggie daycare facility. Thankfully the doggie daycare people found out what happened in time, and no dogs died. It is horrible to think that someone would do such a heinous thing, but some people in world are just plain evil. At least all the dogs got to the nearest animal hospital very quickly, or else it could have been tragic. I can't remember if the cops ever found the person responsible, but it was big in the news.

I think yelling, and barking can both be annoying. Personally I'd rather hear barking. Your neighbor should pay more attention to his, or her dog.

    • I actually have 3 dogs (so I'm definitely not an anti dog guy) My dogs don't carry on, hardly bark at all! I highly doubt that I have just been lucky 3 times, Probably more I am responsible and others probably shouldn't have pets if they wont control them.

Sorry to say, but I get why someone would get so upset they would end up poisoning a dog. That high pitch yap is like a slap in the face, then to have it go on for hours. I love dogs but this guy and his silly dogs drive me to the point that I want to kill these animals and finally I can have it stop. So its not evil, I think leaving dogs out barking is evil :)

      • What kinda dogs do you have?

        Comment Hidden ( show )
      • Nope, I could never harm a dog unless it was threatening me, my cat, or my sister's dog. I think the guy that tried to poison those dogs was evil, everyone on the local news in Houston seemed to think so too. Barking doesn't bother me. Also I don't think that the daycare facility was near a residential area. It was really just a very bad person. I could never cut someone slack for harming a dog just for noise. If anything the sounds of dogs, and cats make me feel happy.

Seriously, I could watch someone shoot a dog killer in the face, and probably not feel much. Most dogs are wonderful creatures!

Violent dogs on the other hand I think should be eliminated with extreme prejudice.

Anyway, your neighbor should get his dogs under control. Maybe you could complain to the HOA, or place a noise complaint to the cops?

        • Yea can't stand violent dogs. I envy you not being upset by dog barking. Is it because you have been lucky and have not been subject to the torture of that high pitch bark. I do know there a lot of people that seem not to even hear the bark at all, there brain ignores it. Me on the other hand its like an alarm going off, just imagine listening to a smoke alarm for 4 hours strait.

I know nothing of this dog poisoning. To kill a dog for kicks is farked but loosing it in a fit of rage because you have listened to that alarm day in and day out....

I have cattle dogs which are usually notorious for barking. They all got squirted with the hose when they were barking at a young age. Thats all I did in the training not to bark and it work wonderful with not to much stress on the dog.

          • -
          • No, I don't think losing one's temp in a fit of rage, because a dog has been barking is ever excusable. The average dog, or cat has the intellect of a two, or three year old human. No offense, but I'm not a big fan of people with rage issues.

            • Look I'm not gonna kill some dog, just venting and I'm not completely insane (yet)

Yes people please don't hurt animals. I'm not serious when I say this and I am not recommending anyone do this.

Its irresponsible pet owners that need to be punished! And its serious jail time if you get busted hurting an animal. I think most people are just releasing when they say things like "I just wanna strangle that dog" and I get it, the sound they make can be very stressful and it can take a toll on your health

In saying that though, when a dog yaps on and on I feel like I wanna kick the shit out of it.

              Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Loud dogs should be silenced.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • For the first and second offense yes after that I would call the police. And if problem presists I would shoot the stupid dog. Problem solved.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • Call animal control and let them deal with it. That's what they are there for.

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I am in a similar situation.
Of course the cops do not give a shit. I call animal control and they want video footage, signatures from other neighbors, and god knows what else.

Since we are up late around here and the owner goes to bed early, I basically aggravate the dogs sometimes by banging on the fence or whatever so they go ape shit. If the cops nor animal control is gonna do jack, then why not stress the stupid dogs?

I am glad to say that the neighbor doesn't just leave the dogs out as much. he knows they are a nuisance. What is he gonna say? Fuckwad ain't doing me no favors

    • Yea ill find some way of getting to this prick and giving him a taste of his own medicine.

I wont do anything to aggravate and make his dogs bark. These stupid dogs bark enough as it is, an it makes me want to bash the shit out of this guy.

I'm just cranking my music every time his dogs bark. Drives him crazy but I'm just drowning out the sound of his shit fuck dogs barking. It's not like he can complain. What he can make noise but I cant... Don't think so. My receiver is a big heavy powerful thing. Now barking dogs drive me crazy but I can listen to loud thumping music 24/7. I actually fall to sleep with loud music no problem.

      • Fight fire with fire.

Be careful though because if you are playing Taylor Swift, you could get cited for noise pollution.

I am guessing you have tried to be civil first but it didn't work? That is the first step.
The second step is actually to fight fire with fire.

        • I wont hold there hand and whisper sweet love in there ear! The fact is if I have dogs outside or if I bring a stereo outside and play it loud I know the neighbors will hear it and most probably it will upset them, so I don't need them to tell me... But in saying that I make it clear that the barking is annoying. I have actually been threatened with violence for asking nicely for someone to deal with there dogs barking.

Taylor Swift and this guy will probably come out dancing yelling "turn it up bud"

          • Oh jesus. Are you sure your neighbor isn't a fudge packer? NO straight male would say to turn up Taylor Swift. What if though say you played it and he came out acting all giddy and said, "TAY TAY! Oh I LOoOoOoOVE her!"
If that happens, guard your dick and ass when he is around. ANYways...

You know though, people with annoying dogs have GOT to know it is a nuisance. I mean it isn't like those damned 80's PSA's called "One to grow on" where someone would say, "Oh come up, your dogs are annoying POS, can you shut them up?" and the dog owner says sorry and shuts them up.

But aren't you trans?! I'm straight and I've never seen a trans hate on a gay male. Lol arn't they related like cousins or even the same depending who you talk to. No hate on you just kinda ironic, made me laugh. Haha

Just like them poor barsteds ya hear about that go and ask there neighbor to please control that dog, everything seems fine until everyday after that he brings his dogs out at 5 in the morning barking just to piss ya off. Some people can not stand people telling them that they are to noisy so they go crazy and turn it into a game, spending every second of there pathetic life thinking up ways to upset you... Funny old world.

  • In my experience dogs like this are being mistreated. Not abused per se, but kept in the backyard the whole time or not given love and affection. These dogs will typically whine and bark incessantly as they seek attention and fear any foreign people. Both my neighbours have these types of incessant barking dogs and it drives me crazy too. I can't even go into a certain part of my backyard without the fucking dog barking like mad. I honestly want to climb on the wall and throw a fucking rock at that little shit.

    • LOL... Also you have the right to enjoy your property in peace without being constantly harassed by barking dogs.

If every time you went out ya backyard and I (your neighbor) came out and yelled and harassed you I would be pretty quickly taken away buy the police.

  • Please guys don't get dogs if you are lazy, def, out a lot or irresponsible.

You wouldn't believe the DB these animals can produce, its louder then a high powered stereo at full ball

The year is 2019. We have no need for barking dogs as alarms or guard dogs. I would hope by now we have good cheep technology to use as alarms and not use dogs that have a high risk of running around barking at the echo of there own bark.

  • Don't yell at him, just talk to him normally. If the problem persists, call a non-emergency line for the police. Also dogs aren't real.
