Is it okay to stand in varanda during a thunderstorm?

I live in a costal area and at the top of a building. I enjoy watching the rain sitting in Varanda. But I fear if the lightning of the sky would fall on me. So can I really enjoy it or not?

  • Lightning can and does strike people inside buildings. Link below to article mentioning one case.

If you're sitting on a porch or veranda or under some other solid cover which means you're not the highest point in the area, you're not near pipes or electrical wiring, and the floor is a good electrical insulator, then your risk is much reduced. However, I can imagine a scenario where if somebody was standing beneath a light fitting, they were wet and standing on a wet steel-reinforced concrete floor when lightning hit the main electrical supply for the house, the jump from the light fitting to the person's head could be the path of least resistance to ground.

I love watching electrical storms too, but lightning is notorious capricious and unpredictable, so it needs to be treated with great caution.

  • Ever since I was like able to remember I had this dream we were at my cousins for summer and I got left behind and then locked out of the house and the place I was playing in had no roof and a storm came in and the lightening almost got me I’ve been scared ever since so no don’t go out in a storm I’d freak out.

  • I grew up down South along the Gulf Coast, and I have seen many houses with verandas, and even some with verandahs, but never have I seen a house with a varanda.

  • I'm not sure if your English is a barrier to understanding what you're trying to say. Do you want to ask if the sky would FALL on you? No, don't worry about that.
