Is it okay to tease someone on something they don’t know?

So, I recently found out kinder eggs are coming to the states, my friend who lives in Europe has always had them. So when I was trying to figure out what they were and how it worked he began teasing me.

I know some teasing is okay and whatever, but it felt like I was being called an idiot and stupid for not knowing something that was literally banned from the country.

Am I just being overly sensitive? I don’t really tolerate bullying or teasing that much because of past issues.

Is It OK To?

  • It's kinda petty.

  • Just keep your silly religions out of politics/legislation.

  • I'm fine with mocking people who are stupid enough to believe in God, the flat earth, the Reptilian Illuminati, and other totally nonsensical stuff, but him making fun of you over something as trivial as Kinder Eggs was very immature. (BTW, speaking as a European parent, I can tell you that the chocolate is awful, the plastic toys are useless, and they are, in short, a huge waste of money.)

Him teasing you about Kinder Eggs is like you mocking him for never having heard of the band that only plays in the bar down the street from where you live.

Some guys, especially teenage guys, just don't know when their mockery has gone too far. Usually, they grow out of it, although sometimes the catalyst needed for that change is a punch in the nose.

Respect and be respected. I don't believe either but we, as a humans, lack the omnipotence to say things like that don't exist, even if they sound dumb as shit.

      • So if I say there are fairies living in my garden and that's why there are little mounds of earth with turds beneath them in the flowerbeds, that belief deserves respect?

        • No but doesn't deserve mockery either. People choose to believe what they want but the intelligent ones choose a particular set of beliefs. That doesn't make those beliefs more true or more false. Just more useful to me and you.

          • You seem to be saying that there is no objective truth, and I just can't buy that.

I used to think similarly to you, but once I got to 40 or so, I looked around, thought about what I'd learned, and decided that a lot of people really are full of shit. Sometimes, that's not their fault, but even though ignorance is a curable disease, the majority of people don't want to take the medicine because it interferes with their time doing important things like watching football, drinking beer, or reorganising their Kinder Egg collection.

David Icke's Reptilian Illuminati crap and those who believe in it do deserved to be mocked, even though - because it's impossible to prove a negative - I can't prove that Queen Elizabeth II _isn't_ a shape-shifting alien lizard.

I don't sit outside churches making fun of those going inside to have a chat with their imaginary friend, but the world is full of examples of the very bad things that happen when absurd, irrational, and baseless religious beliefs aren't only tolerated, but pandered to.

    • I agree Kinder Eggs are rubbish and it's been a joke between my grand-daughter (now 10) for years that she always asks for one in the supermarket with a big grin on her face and I always say no.
